The discussion on Saturday May 3rd covered ਸੈਭੰ(Saibhan) from the Mool Mantra. There was general agreement that the term has traditionally been interpreted as "self-illumined" or "self-created."
Another way of looking at it would be to refer to Ultimate Reality as "uncaused" or "unborn (aajooni)".
Some key observations made by various participants:
- that this refers also to the state of one's consciousness which is "from the light" or "of the light" and therefore unborn.
- we are both "nirgun" and "sargun" and a part of us is rooted in the "Timeless." That is our source.
- the term has been used in Gurbani with different spellings
A request was made that an attempt be made to move beyond "traditional" explanations as suggested by Prof Sahib Singh or Giani Harbans Singh. Not that these do not provide value - indeed they do - but
that we need to view Gurmat also through the lens of contemporary thinking (Sahib mera neet navaan). One such suggestion was to examine the current concept of "Living Systems" that has arisen from the Life Sciences,
which suggests that all Creation displays a remarkable regularity and consistency in the way that the catalytic and metabolic processes of Life at all levels work - evoking Gurbani's suggestion that (jo brahmande soi pinde).
